Automatic and other methods of updating Neat Devices
Last updated August 4, 2025
All Neat devices are are preconfigured in a way that they will upgrade automatically when they are installed. In this article, we will explain how Neat devices are upgraded and also introduce the other ways of upgrading your device.
Note: It is important to make sure that the cloud services, websites and NTP servers are allowed for Neat devices to be configured successfully. Please check the Network and Firewall article for more information. If you are encountering issues, please check the Troubleshooting during installation section of this website.
Important note: While this article is lists all methods of upgrading your Neat device, the recommended methods of upgrading Neat Devices are using either Neat Pulse or Automatic upgrades. For Microsoft Teams customers, you may sometimes be instructed to upgrade through Microsoft Teams Admin Center. However, we don’t recommend using either Manual upgrade (without Pulse) or Zoom platform to upgrade our devices and strongly recommend managing these upgrades through Neat Pulse instead. It is important to ensure your Neat devices are running support software release to access help from Neat Technical Support. For more information on supported release, please check Neat’s Technical Support Policy.

1.Automatic Updates
When Neat devices are first taken out of the box (OOB), they are running the Neat firmware version that was loaded on the device at the factory during manufacturing/production. The devices come preconfigured with the following default settings:
- Channel: Stable
- Automatic updates: enabled
Once your device is successfully connected to the network, the first action it will perform is to check if a new software is available on its cloud storage, under the stable channel (https://ota.neat.no/stable.json). If a software is available, it will proceed to upgrading before the unit can be setup fully. Once this action is performed, you won’t be able to downgrade back to an older software version.
If you leave your device with its default settings, it will continue to regularly query https://ota.neat.no/stable.json to check for the latest Stable firmware and if it detects a later version it will automatically update to that latest version.
2.Neat Pulse
Once your device is added to Neat Pulse, from that moment onwards Neat Pulse will control the full upgrade process for your device. For more information on this, please navigate to the section: How to update using Neat Pulse.
3.Updating via Microsoft Teams and Zoom
Occasionally we advise customers to upgrade their Neat devices through Microsoft Team Admin Center (TAC). This is usually done when we have a specific build that is only available through TAC but not via Neat’s stable channel yet (e.g. an AOSP-supported build by Microsoft Teams). For more instructions, please see the Updating Neat Devices running Microsoft Teams article.
For Neat devices running Zoom Room, it is possible to upgrade using Zoom Device Management platform (ZDM). However, often the software versions available may not be the latest version that are on the current stable channel available through Neat’s cloud services. Also there may be issues when doing bulk upgrades using ZDM. For these reasons, we usually advice customers to stick to either Automatic upgrade or Neat Pulse instead of using ZDM for upgrades. For more information on this method, please see Updating Neat Devices running Zoom Room article.
Please note that for upgrading through ZDM or TAC, you will first need to disable automatic upgrades on your Neat Device as otherwise the software updates via the automatic channel will continue to work.
4.Manual Update (without Neat Pulse)
Finally, it is possible disable Automatic updates on Neat devices altogether and manually upgrade the devices. We strongly discourage you to use Manual update as often this can result in your device be left on very old, unsupported software release, especially if you are not using TAC or ZDM to upgrade your devices. For more information on supported software versions, please see Neat’s Technical Support Policy.
Please note that this Manual update method is a different to the Manual update method available through Neat Pulse.
When you choose this method, instead of regularly checking https://ota.neat.no/stable.json URL for latest software version, Neat device will start checking https://ota.neat.no/manual.json URL. This URL contains links to much olded software releases. As long as your Neat device is running newer software release than the ones listed on the website, your device will not update. This way, you can prevent your device from upgrading.
Note: Please note that on certain occasions, Neat will upgrade the manual channel if there are specific reasons to do so (e.g. security or resolve critical bugs). When this happens, if your device was running an older software than the ones we list on Manual channel, it will proceed to upgrade.
To use the Manual update feature you need to disable Automatic updates. To do this:
- On your Neat device, go to System Settings -> System -> Software update and turn off the Automatic updates toggle.
- A disclaimer entitled ‘Manage upgrades manually’ displays. This explains that by opting out of automatic updates, you are now responsible for manually upgrading all your Neat devices using the Zoom Room administrator portal. Please read the disclaimer carefully and click Confirm if you accept the conditions.
